Bristol Hospitality Leaders Unite to Slash Single-Use Plastics
Hospitality leaders, restaurateurs, and environmental campaigners across the city are joining forces this month to tackle the ongoing crisis of single-use plastic waste.
Curry and Conversation, an interactive educational workshop series, will take place at Naan & Co in Clifton on Tuesday 29 September from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Led by award-winning campaigner Naseem Talukdar, founder of Projects Against Plastic (PAP), the free session aims to give independent restaurants, takeaways, and caterers practical tools to eliminate disposable plastics.
“It’s vital that we tackle plastic pollution together,” said Talukdar. “The choices we make today shape the environment future generations will inherit. While it’s positive to see single-use plastic addressed at a government level, compliance remains a real hurdle for independent operators. We must be proactive in testing realistic, cost-effective alternatives.”
Adapting to UK Regulations
The initiative comes nearly three years after the UK government banned single-use plastic cutlery, plates, bowls, and trays in England. While the ban has significantly cut high-volume disposable items, plastic packaging waste across the wider food sector remains stubbornly high, with additional restrictions—including bans on plastic-stemmed wet wipes—expected in 2027.
Talukdar, who also serves as director for social responsibility and sustainability for UK Curry Connect (UKCC), brings frontline insight into the operational and staffing pressures currently facing the Asian catering sector.
Local Business Champions Recognised
For this edition, Projects Against Plastic is partnering with the High Sheriff of Bristol, Anne Nisbet, to celebrate local businesses leading the charge in sustainable food packaging.
Mrs Nisbet, of catering supplier Nisbets and The Nisbet Trust, works closely with regional charities and hospitality businesses navigating the dual pressures of rising operating costs and ecological standards.
The workshop is also supported by Bristol-based Naan & Co and Sponsor Licence Specialists (SLS), a consultancy assisting firms with skilled worker recruitment.
