Discover Summer Adventures at The Roman Baths & Victoria Art Gallery
Families are in for a memorable summer in Bath with a vibrant line-up of events and activities at The Roman Baths and Victoria Art Gallery, perfect for keeping children entertained during the school holidays.
At The Roman Baths, young explorers can take part in Archaeology Adventures, digging for replica Roman artefacts in an interactive trench and learning how real archaeologists identify and record their discoveries. This hands-on experience, recommended for ages 5-12, takes place in the underground Investigation Zone and costs £6 per child, in addition to admission.
The museum also offers a series of family craft activities, inspired by treasures from the Baths’ historic collection. Children can create gemstone decorations, imperial crowns, or Roman-style brooches – all included in the entry ticket (ages 3+). Families can also embark on the Grimwood Museum Adventure Trail, a free self-guided experience designed by Kids in Museums to celebrate the new Grimwood book Rock the Vote! by Nadia Shireen.
For a unique evening experience, Summer Lates invite visitors to explore the ancient site after dark, with torchlight views of the Great Bath. Running Monday to Thursday until 8pm, and weekends until 10pm, these evenings include live music and refreshments for all ages.
The Victoria Art Gallery is hosting The Lost Spells: Listening to a Landscape of Voices, a captivating exhibition of paintings by Jackie Morris and poetry by Robert Macfarlane. Families can follow a free children’s trail, crawl through a badger sett, play dress-up, and contribute to a storytelling tree.
Creative youngsters can join Mini Makers workshops (£5 per participant) to make origami birds, nature-inspired crafts, or write their own poetry. Free family craft sessions are also available, offering activities like bracelet making and pen painting (ages 3+).
Councillor Paul Roper, Cabinet Member for Economic and Cultural Sustainable Development, said:
“This summer, we’re inviting families to explore Bath’s heritage and culture – whether it’s unearthing Roman artefacts or enjoying nature-inspired crafts. Local residents can also take advantage of free entry with a Discovery Card, making this a perfect summer day out.”
