North Somerset Launches 2025 Summer Reading Challenge!

Children in North Somerset are invited to dive into the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge, “Story Garden,” beginning this Saturday, July 5th.

Developed by The Reading Agency, this popular initiative encourages kids aged four to eleven to read or listen to books throughout the summer holidays. Participants can collect free rewards from their local library as they complete the challenge.

This year’s “Story Garden” theme, brought to life with beautiful artwork by illustrator Dapo Adeola, invites children to explore imaginative stories celebrating the great outdoors. For the first time, children under four can also join, receiving their own sticker collection folder, a shiny medal, and a certificate upon completion.

North Somerset Council libraries will host various craft events and special storytimes all summer long. Keep an eye on your local library for more details! Plus, children’s author Helen Docherty will visit Yatton and Worle libraries on Tuesday, August 26th.

Councillor Mike Solomon, North Somerset Council’s cabinet member for Libraries, highlighted the scheme’s importance: “This national scheme is a fantastic way to encourage children to read for fun over the holidays and improve their reading skills, during a period when we know reading can dip.” He hopes young people enjoy this year’s theme of the great outdoors.

Councillor Catherine Gibbons, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Lifelong Learning and Skills, added, “Reading is power – it boosts imagination and creativity, and this year’s theme is all about combining the joy of reading with the benefits of connecting with nature.”
