Bristol’s The Mount Without welcomes pioneering dance company for three performances

Tuesday 17th – Thursday 19th November

This November, Bristol’s leading contemporary dance company IMPERMANENCE welcomes Corali to The Mount Without for PHANTASIA, an exciting new double bill exploring the relationship between movement and sound-making.

Taking place from Tuesday 17th – Thursday 19th November, the performances mark a return to Bristol for the South London-based company, following previous partnership projects with local artists Tom Marshman and IMPERMANENCE.

PHANTASIA features two bold and imaginative performances that explore the relationship between movement and sound-making, presenting two opposing visions of a future world: one a joyful, surreal dream, the other a dark and unsettling nightmare.

Daisy Dreams is inspired by painter Mark Beldan’s flower works and created in collaboration with musician Matt Webb. The piece brings together visual art, movement and sound to create a dreamlike world that is playful, joyful and at times absurd.

In contrast, Mannequin Dreams takes audiences into a strange, almost nightmarish world. Inspired by Corali dancer Jackie Ryan’s idea to work with mannequins, the piece imagines a new civilisation shaped by fragments of memory and a lost sense of what it means to be human.

Both works reflect Corali’s collaborative approach to making dance, where the ideas and creativity of learning-disabled dancers play a central role. Combining choreography, live and recorded sound and striking visual elements, PHANTASIA takes the audience on an imaginative and unexpected journey.

Based in Brixton, South London, Corali is a leader in dance created by learning-disabled dancers. Its return to Bristol forms part of IMPERMANENCE’s ongoing programme at The Mount Without, which brings bold and innovative contemporary dance from across the UK and beyond to audiences in the South West.

Sarah Archdeacon, Artist Director at Corali, said: “PHANTASIA is a celebration of imagination and the extraordinary creativity of our dancers. Both pieces take audiences into completely different worlds, from the playful and surreal to something much darker, and we’re excited to share them with Bristol audiences. We’ve really valued our previous collaborations with artists in the city, so it feels particularly special to return with this new work.”

Bristol’s IMPERMANENCE welcomes pioneering dance company Corali

Since opening a dedicated 200-seat theatre for dance at The Mount Without in January 2025, IMPERMANENCE has continued to develop the historic venue as a home for contemporary dance in Bristol. Co-directed by Joshua Ben-Tovim and Roseanna Anderson, the company champions boundary-pushing performance, providing a platform for established and emerging artists while making exceptional dance experiences accessible to local audiences.

Josh Ben-Tovim, Co-Director of IMPERMANENCE, said: “We’ve had the pleasure of working with Corali before and it’s fantastic to welcome them back to Bristol. Their approach to making dance is always exciting, putting the creativity and ideas of their dancers front and centre. PHANTASIA is exactly the kind of bold, imaginative work we want to champion at The Mount Without, bringing different voices and perspectives to the stage and giving Bristol audiences the chance to experience something unexpected.”
