FORWARDS 2024 BRISTOL CLOSES MUSIC LINE UP WITH THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN AND GLASS BEAMS
Following last week’s announcement of rave pioneers UNDERWORLD being added to the FORWARDS lineup, the Bristol festival now closes its 2024 music programme and unveils final names on this year’s bill.
THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN will be performing their only Bristol show this year, at FORWARDS.
Formed in 1983 by Scottish brothers Jim and William Reid, the duo pioneered a unique blend of noisy guitar feedback and melodic pop. This innovative sound significantly influenced the indie rock scene and left a lasting impact on future musicians and will impress Bristol with their live performance on Sunday.
The mysterious ensemble GLASS BEAMS will draw from their Indian and South Asian roots to infuse psychedelia with surf rock, promising to deliver an ethereal performance that will enrapture Bristol this year. Their inaugural album ‘Mirage’ presents a mesmerising amalgamation of 70s Indian classical, disco elements, all through the prism of DIY electronica.

Also joining the 2024 FORWARDS programme is a collection of Big Team’s Next Level Artist Development Programme, a project specially designed to help support aspiring artists, including alternative soul artist SAMBEE, Bossa Nova artist AVA ZARATE, and fresh duo on the Bristol scene RELLZ & YB MICZ on Saturday. As well as pop rock newcomer SSADCHARLIE, R&B songstress LAURA DIA and soulful singer MARNS on Sunday.
This year’s bill will also welcome a selection of local Bristol artists taking the stage on Saturday, including producer and rapper DANNY CHASKA, lo-fi rapper KWAZI, and jazz and future soul inspired band LAIMU. Sunday will see psychedelic soul group COUSIN KULA, post-punk band KNIVES and alternative indie rock band LICE.
NEXT LEVEL ARTIST DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
Big Team and Bristol Beacon have joined forces in search of the city’s best emerging talent. Now in its third year, they are bringing the activity to Bristol Beacon’s brand new redeveloped studios and stages, as well as returning to the Big Team festival circuit.
This project has been specially designed to help support aspiring artists who are making original music of modern genres, and might already be making steps with performing live, or releasing records. Aiming to help advance the artist’s creative development through building confidence and connection whilst enhancing their writing, recording, performance, and promotional skills.
With guidance from well-established artists who are experienced in the industry, and a number of active organisations in the local music scene, the hope is that together they can support the next generation of exciting Bristol artists to take their careers to the NEXT LEVEL.
A replacement for Maribou State is soon to be announced following the cancellation of the duo’s 2024 shows.
Tom Paine, Co-founder of Team Love: “FORWARDS is back for its third year, and we couldn’t be prouder. Each year it grows, evolves and delivers even more for the city of Bristol and beyond. From an international and genre-spanning music lineup to future thinking talks, initiatives and with a growing-in-popularity kids area, FORWARDS is the perfect day out for everyone”.
Jim King, CEO, European Festivals, AEG Presents: “We’re thrilled to be bringing FORWARDS back to the Bristol Downs for its third year. Offering a packed lineup of international music acts with headliners LCD Soundsystem and Loyle Carner, supported by the likes of Floating Points and Yard Act.
The two day festival will also see timely debate and conversation on the INFORMATION, providing an important platform for discussion and will be featuring a host of experts, disruptors, creatives, writers and thinkers”.
