Appeal Launched as Bristol Families Struggle with Christmas Costs
New research commissioned by charity Family Action has revealed that one in six parents and carers in Bristol have considered cancelling Christmas due to mounting financial pressures.
The study highlights the severe economic strain on local households ahead of the festive season, with one in twelve parents in the city admitting they will be unable to afford any Christmas presents for their children this year.
In response, national charity Family Action has launched its annual Toy Appeal, urging members of the public, local businesses, and community groups across Bristol to help ensure no child misses out on the magic of Christmas.
Key Findings: Financial Strain on Local Parents
The survey paints a stark picture of the emotional and financial burden placed on parents across the city:
-
Cancelling Celebrations: 16% (almost 1 in 6) of surveyed Bristol parents and carers agreed they have considered cancelling Christmas due to lack of funds.
-
Unable to Buy Gifts: 8% (almost 1 in 12) stated they cannot afford to buy presents for their children this year.
-
Parental Guilt: Over two-thirds (68%) feel they have failed their children if they cannot provide requested Christmas gifts.
-
Children’s Anxiety: Nearly a quarter (23%) believe their children are actively worried about family finances and festive spending.
-
Loss of Magic: 46% of parents agreed that Christmas feels less magical due to ongoing financial strain.
“Relief, Dignity and Christmas Magic”
Last year, hundreds of Bristol families received presents through local donations. Family Action hopes to expand its reach this year as more households face severe hardship.
Recipients from previous appeals shared the profound relief the initiative brings. One local parent explained:
“The Toy Appeal really helps us out as things are very, very tight this year so we can wrap the gift for him and say it’s from us.”
Another parent noted:
“We sat there and read his book while he hugged his teddy from the Toy Appeal… I was so grateful. I wouldn’t have bought them as they weren’t necessities and, at that time (having just been made redundant), I was only thinking about necessities.”
Sir David Holmes CBE, Chief Executive of Family Action, emphasized the broader impact of community support:
“Our new research shows the painful reality facing many families this Christmas. Parents want so much to give their children joy, but many are being forced to make choices no family should have to make. A donated gift can mean far more than a toy — it can mean relief, dignity and a moment of Christmas magic.”
How to Support the Toy Appeal
