Completion of Old Market Gap Improvement Works

Bristol City Council are pleased to announce the completion of construction work aimed at enhancing pedestrian and cycling accessibility between Old Market roundabout, Castle Street, and Tower Hill.

The area, known as the Old Market Gap, now features:

– Wider and safer crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists

– A segregated cycle route on Tower Hill with protected pedestrian spaces connecting the Old Market roundabout to Castle Street

Councillor Ed Plowden, Chair of the Transport and Connectivity Committee, stated: “I am delighted to unveil the new layout for this busy central junction. This project addresses a longstanding gap in our cycling network by replacing an inadequate subway with more user-friendly infrastructure. The redesigned area will significantly improve navigation for all road users. I am confident that we will see more ambitious projects like this across the city in future years.”

“This initiative is part of our broader strategy to encourage active travel, delivering numerous health, wellbeing, and economic benefits while assisting us in reducing congestion and air pollution throughout the city.”

While construction has been successfully completed, further landscaping efforts will be undertaken during summer and autumn. This phase will include planting shrubs and new trees to enhance the area’s aesthetic appeal.
