Bristol City Center promenade work get set to start

Bristol City Council is undertaking a major renovation of Centre Promenade to improve the public space and create a more welcoming environment.

THE PROJECT INVOLVES SEVERAL KEY CHANGES:

Fountain Removal: The three broken fountains will be filled in, and the old decking will be replaced with a new, level surface.

Artwork: A large-scale 2D artwork will be incorporated into the new surface, enhancing the area’s aesthetic appeal.

Platforms: Platforms will be built over steps to provide additional space for concessions like street food.

Tree Replacement: Five London plane trees will be removed due to their unstable roots and replaced with smaller, more suitable blossoming trees.

These changes aim to create a more open and accessible space for pedestrians, cyclists, and market vendors. The project is expected to take up to three months to complete and may temporarily impact the harbor market.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS AND FUTURE PLANS

The felled trees will be processed into woodchip for use in biomass boilers and as mulch for the newly planted trees. The council is also reviewing the cycle route through Centre Promenade to improve safety and reduce conflicts with pedestrians.

FUNDING AND PARTNERSHIP

The renovations are being funded by Bristol City Council and the West of England Combined Authority. The project is part of a broader initiative to revitalize the city center and improve public spaces.
