Bristol’s A4 Portway will be closed for necessary tree maintenance due to ash dieback.
The A4 Portway will be closed in both directions for ten nights and one weekend to carry out significant tree maintenance.
This project will unfold over three distinct phases.
Week 1: From January 13 to January 17, A4 Portway will be shut down from Park Road to Sylvan Way nightly between 9 PM and 5:30 AM.
Week 2: Closure of A4 Portway from Sylvan Way to Bridge Valley Road is scheduled for January 20 to January 24, also during the same night hours. Weekend: On Saturday, February 1, and Sunday, February 2, both Bridge Valley Road and A4 Portway (from Sylvan Way to Cumberland Basin) will be closed between 2 AM and 2 PM on Saturday and between 2 AM and 4 PM on Sunday.

The Brunel Way flyover (A3029) at Cumberland Basin will remain operational during these works. However, during the weekend closures on February’s first weekend, access ramps onto A4 Portway—namely Bennett Way, Cabot Way, as well as a segment of Cumberland Basin Road beneath Plimsoll Bridge—will not be available.
The council advises pedestrians and cyclists to seek alternative paths while these closures are in effect. If passage through the work zones is necessary, marshals will assist individuals navigating through safely.
