Unique Gender Stories at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery
The Bristol Museum & Art Gallery will host the groundbreaking exhibition, Gender Stories, from 31 May to 12 October 2025, before it travels to Brighton Museum and Art Gallery and National Museums Liverpool.
Featuring renowned artists like Grayson Perry, David Hockney, and Catherine Opie, the exhibition delves into the complexities of gender identity, challenging traditional binary notions and exploring its intersection with sex, identity, and sexuality across diverse cultures and historical periods.
Through a rich collection of artworks, historical artifacts, personal narratives, and newly commissioned pieces, Gender Stories provides a reflective space on the fluidity of gender and the evolving understanding of self-expression. A highlight exclusive to the Bristol leg is the commission of two large-scale murals by trans artist and educator, Mister SAMO. He expressed his appreciation for the mindful and supportive approach of Bristol Museum, highlighting the opportunity to expand his artistic practice and personal growth.

Developed collaboratively with Bristol Museums, National Museums Liverpool, Brighton & Hove Museums, and communities from all three cities, Gender Stories presents powerful personal accounts alongside academic insights from gender theory. This inclusive platform encourages discussions on both the joys and challenges associated with gender identity.
Visitors will be invited to contemplate fundamental questions such as: How is gender performed? What defines gender? Who determines an individual’s gender? And what does the future hold for gender? The exhibition will explore how these concepts have been mythologized, stereotyped, expressed, and sometimes concealed throughout history, politics, art, and everyday life.
Philip Walker, Bristol City Council’s Head of Culture and Creative Industries, emphasized the timeliness and inclusivity of Gender Stories, noting its significance as the first exhibition under the MAGNET network collaboration. He highlighted that the exhibition acknowledges the unique narratives of the LGBTQIA+ community, focusing on joy, celebration, and expression while addressing the harms associated with gender. Gender Stories aims to be a dynamic and inclusive space for all seeking a deeper understanding of diverse experiences, underscoring the importance of dialogue and self-discovery.
