Bristol High Street Market Celebrates 5th Anniversary With The Lord Lieutenant.

On Thursday 5th September the High Street Market was celebrating its 5th Anniversary.

There seemed to be four different weather forecasts for the day all wrong and it literally poured down with rain throughout the day. Huge respect to the outdoor Market Stallholders who were determined to not let the rain get the better of them!

The Lord Lieutenant Mrs Peaches Golding was special guest at the event and arrived at 11am in full uniform and ceremonial sword.

Having met the Market Management Team and several of their volunteers, the Lord Lieutenant cut the 5th Anniversary celebration cake with her ceremonial sword and then gave a short speech for all to hear.

“I welcome you all and to also wish you so very well on this your fifth anniversary and actually it’s the firth anniversary to the day isn’t it? It was on the Thursday that you had your first market here five years ago and it’s tremendous because it’s a great way to bring the community together.

It’s a great way to support the community and each of the four communities in this area that have trades people, have shoppers, and certainly add vibrancy to the High Street.

So I want to thank each and everyone of you for being here. The volunteers especially for having put in all the time to make this market the success that it is.

So have a wonderful fifth anniversary, continue doing the things that bring us together because that shows humanity and the fact that there’s more that unites us than ever could divide us.

So thank you Shirehampton for showing us ow to have a market and how to have a market place and how to have a market community. Thank you so very much” Three hip hip horray’s followed and everyone joined in and gave the Lord Lieutenant a round of applause.

Whilst the cake was being cut Mrs Golding was introduced to all the Market Stallholders including those braving the elements outside.

Regardless of the rain she was determined to meet everyone especially four of the seven original stallholders that remain trading at the market including JJ Crafts and Gems, JuLeS4U – who retire in December – Food By Sophie and Ruby Jeans/Lavender and Lime Bakery. Happy Anniversary to you too.

Mrs Golding had lunch provided by Food by Sophie, cake from the Market Kitchen and plenty of coffee. The Lord Lieutenant chatted away to customers and then went shopping, buying items from several of the stallholders. She had thoroughly enjoyed her time with everyone.

Despite the rain the market had a steady stream of customers. The celebrations came to a conclusion by 3pm and the volunteers began taking down the balloons and bunting that had been put up for the occasion.

Ash Bearman, Community Development Officer for SCAF said. “Thank you to everyone involved in today’s event. Our monthly High Street Market is an achievement to be proud of especially in the current financial climate that we all face. That is down to the hard work of the Management Team, our volunteers and our Market Traders.

We each believe in what we are doing and the local community continue to shop with us. If we loose them then there would be no market”.

The High Street Market is held on the first Thursday of each month at the Tithe Barn, Shirehampton, BS11 0DE. From 3rd October the market has new opening hours from 9am until 2pm until the end of the year.
