Martial artists from Bristol are celebrating after winning 15 medals at a national competition.

Students from Fishponds Taekwondo Academy and Thornbury TKD took part in the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) competition in Hatfield, Hertfordshire.

They returned with gold, silver and bronze medals for patterns and sparring in junior and adult categories.

Instructor Gavin Reader, who is a 3rd degree Black Belt in the Korean-based martial art and has been a sports coach for two decades, said he was proud of the students’ achievements.

Perseverance

Gavin, who has worked as a paramedic and is a project manager for the NHS, said: “It takes courage to take part in a competition and I’m proud of the work they put in.

“It’s lovely to return with so many medals. But, more importantly, they followed the Taekwondo tenets of courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit.”

Several students also acted as umpires at the event, following training to ensure they are up to date with the rules, regulations and latest technical aspects of the art.

Instructor Simon Herrington, who has achieved the rank of 3rd degree Black Belt, has been an umpire for numerous competitions.

The senior project manager said: “It’s a great event to get involved in – be it as a competitor, umpire, referee or spectator – and see people perform at such a high standard.”

World Champion instructor

Thornbury TKD was set up 20 years ago by Vaughan Buxton, a 7th degree black belt and a British, European and World title holder.

Kieran, who is a first class (Hons) law with business graduate from the University of the West of England (UWE), said: “It’s a great event and it’s lovely to win a gold medal.

“I’ve been fortunate to train with Master Buxton, who is a top-class instructor and has helped me to hone my technique over the years.”

Esme, who is studying law at London South Bank University (LSBU) and works part-time as a legal assistant with Co-op, added: “We are lucky to train with one of the best sparring coaches in the country – with variety and fun brought to our sessions.

“Taekwondo is an enjoyable way to get fit, improve concentration and learn self-defence.”
