Bristol receives Purple Flag accreditation
Bristol is honored to announce the renewal of its esteemed Purple Flag accreditation for the 14th consecutive year, highlighting our enduring commitment to a safe and vibrant nighttime economy.
The Purple Flag designation, akin to the Green Flag awarded to some of our parks, exemplifies Bristol’s ongoing efforts to enhance nightlife. This distinguished recognition underscores the city’s prominence as a premier destination for evening activities, emphasizing safety, inclusivity, and community participation between 6 PM and 6 AM.
Conferred by the National Association of Town Centre Management (ATCM), this prestigious award evaluates various criteria including safety measures, diversity in offerings, vibrancy of atmosphere, accessibility standards, cleanliness levels, and collaborative efforts among local entities.
Bristol’s continued success in maintaining its Purple Flag status can be attributed to strategic initiatives undertaken in collaboration with key partners such as Avon and Somerset Police Department; Bristol Ambulance Service; Bristol Waste Management; Bristol Business Improvement Districts (BIDs); Street Pastors; and notably led by Bristol City Council through the Bristol Nights Partnership.
The Bristol Nights initiative is instrumental in supporting city operations during night hours. Engaging stakeholders from across diverse sectors working from 6 PM-6 AM, Bristol Nights has pioneered numerous innovations within the nighttime economy.
These include implementing the UK’s first city-wide Harm Reduction Policy; establishing a Women’s Safety Charter; launching an extensive anti-spiking campaign; and developing Thrive-At-Night programs aimed at enhancing night workers’ wellbeing.
The diversity of the city culture, entertainment, dining and night time venues was also a decisive factor for the accreditation.
Carly Heath, Bristol’s Night Time Economy Advisor, said: “Bristol continues to fly the flag for a world-leading night time economy. I’m thrilled that Bristol’s hard work in creating a safe, welcoming, and diverse night time offer has yet again been awarded the prestigious Purple Flag.
The dedication of the Bristol Nights partnership works all year round to making nightlife safer, stronger, and better connected – so that everyone can enjoy the city after dark.”
Vicky Lee, director of the Bristol City Centre BID said: “Safety is a key priority for us in the work we do towards improving the city centre. We want everyone who comes out to enjoy the amazing businesses open in the later hours to feel safe to do so, and so we are proud to have retained our Purple Flag accreditation for another year.
We hope that this status gives residents and visitors alike even further reassurance that Bristol is a safe place to live, work and play in for years to come.”
Bristol sits alongside the other 100 Purple Flag accredited destinations across the globe.
