Bristol wins international award for night safety
Bristol Nights has been honored with the Best Night Time Economy Initiative accolade at the Music Cities Awards for its Women’s Safety Charter campaign, which champions a strict no-tolerance policy toward harassment in music and nightlife establishments.
As a leading collaborative initiative spearheaded by Bristol City Council, Bristol Nights partners with various organizations throughout the city to promote effective solutions that bolster Bristol’s night time economy, supporting businesses and individuals operating between 6pm and 6am.
Carly Heath, who serves as Bristol’s Night Time Economy Advisor, expressed pride in their achievement: “Winning this esteemed award fills us with immense pride. It underscores our steadfast dedication to fostering safer and more inclusive environments during nighttime hours in our city.
“The nightlife community in Bristol proudly exemplifies best practices. Our intention is to adopt an overarching approach through Bristol Nights, and this recognition affirms that the city rightfully stands as a global frontrunner in enhancing experiences after sunset. The Women’s Safety Charter has played a crucial role among other initiatives, uniting our night time community and empowering venues to offer vibrant yet secure spaces for all.”
Introduced in March 2022, the Women’s Safety Charter consists of seven commitments aimed at assisting venues and nocturnal enterprises tackle issues of harassment and discrimination. By endorsing the Charter, an organization signals its commitment to zero tolerance concerning all forms of harassment—including sexual misconduct and gender-based violence.
Created collaboratively with those working nights, the Bristol Nights project has trained over 500 night safety champions who gain knowledge on how to intervene effectively. More than 90% of participants recommend this training experience to others.
Councillor Stephen Williams, chairing the Public Health and Communities Committee remarked: “We remain devoted to broadening our efforts ensuring everyone can partake in our city’s lively nighttime activities free from fear of harassment or bias. This commendation not only acknowledges what we’ve accomplished but also inspires us towards building a safer future.”
Clare Moody, Police and Crime Commissioner noted: “The Women’s Safety Charter underlines our community’s joint endeavors—venues alongside nighttime businesses—to instigate cultural transformation while empowering staff members creating robust networks for safety advocates across nocturnal settings within the city. This award emphasizes both significance of our mission as well as affirmative outcomes generated by it.”
The Music Cities Awards represents an international competition aimed at recognizing exemplary usage of music across economic development realms—socially responsible measures impacting cities globally both culturallyand environmentally.
