Filwood Broadway Revamp Moves Forward with New Council Homes and Community Space

Plans to revitalise 4–16 Filwood Broadway have officially received planning permission, marking a key milestone in the wider Transforming Filwood Broadway regeneration project.

The approved redevelopment will deliver 18 new council homes, along with commercial and community space, plus a shared residents’ garden.

Designed by RCKa architects, the scheme draws on the heritage and character of Filwood Broadway. All homes will meet national space standards and fall within the Knowle West Local Lettings Policy—ensuring that half are prioritised for people with a strong local connection.

Councillor Barry Parsons, Chair of the Homes and Housing Delivery Committee, welcomed the news:
“This project will breathe new life into Filwood Broadway, with high-quality housing and space for shops and community use. It’s not just about new buildings; it’s about investing in local people and places.”
The wider development includes 48 affordable homes on the neighbouring former cinema site, made up of 42 social rent and 6 shared ownership properties.

Sustainability was a major consideration, with a rebuild chosen over retrofit to maximise long-term energy efficiency and reduce running costs. Local students from E-ACT Merchant’s Academy and Bedminster Down School also contributed ideas for the design of retail units.
