Flood Awareness Event Happening In Shirehampton Bristol

Floods are on the increase throughout the world and much of it is down to climate change. Many people think that floods won’t happen to them but in recent years flooding incidents are moving inland.

This year alone we will see farming crops drop by at least 10% due to the constant rain that has refused to let up and seen fields swimming in rain water with little chance of draining away or drying out.

Shirehampton Climate Emergency Group (SCEG) has joined forces with Shirehampton Community Action Forum (SCAF) to invite the local community to their Flood Awareness event being held this Saturday 27th April from 10am until 12noon at the Public Hall in Shirehampton, Bristol. With Pill just across the River Avon from Shirehampton, they are just an example as to how local business and housing can flood.

Both Pill and Shirehampton have flood gates in place yet the Lamplighters Pub, Lamplighters Marsh and the local Sea Cadets Headquarters have been prone to some flooding. In the last 18 months flood defences have been put in place along Lamplighters Marsh to protect it from the River Avon, but you also need to take into account the water table in the area as well as how efficient drainage systems are working.

If they are damaged or broken, then you have a problem. Even the local Daisy Field, alongside the Portway, you will find, can turn into a quagmire with pools of water to be seen “Shirehampton is at risk of flooding both from the tidal River Avon and from groundwater during local cloudbursts.

” Said Renee Slater, a representative of Shirehampton Climate Emergency Group “The Flood awareness event we are running this Saturday, we will learn about the flood risks we face from continued and increasing climate change, hear what measures Bristol City Council has in place to help us deal with flooding.

There will also be Environment Agency advice on a range of physical alterations that aim to reduce flood risk including the likelihood and consequence of flooding at the level of an individual or small groups of properties.” added Renee. The talks will be followed by a residents’ workshop which aims to gather feedback to start creating a Climate Resilience plan for Shirehampton.
