Joe Sims hosted Bristol Dementia Awards ceremony on 25th September

Actor and BBC Radio Bristol Breakfast presenter Joe Sims hosted Bristol Dementia Action Alliance’s third annual Awards Ceremony on Wednesday 25th September.

Joe was fantastic at highlighting every winner and bringing everyone together to celebrate the amazing work that a wide variety of organisations, groups, businesses and schools have been doing to raise awareness of dementia throughout the city.

Joe had the room full of laughter for two hours as he presented the successful nominees with their awards at the afternoon ceremony at Bristol Indoor Bowls Club, South Liberty Lane, Ashton Vale.

Winners received Bronze, Silver or Gold awards – many returning to try to achieve the next level up.

This was also the second year that schools and children’s groups aimed for The Barbara Award which is named in memory of Tony’s wife Barbara who lived with dementia for over 20 years. Together, they created Bristol Dementia Action Alliance as their way of fighting this disease and helping others.

The Barbara Award winner was Stoke Bishop Primary which has created a dementia awareness culture throughout the school by visiting care homes, forming intergenerational friendships, hosting Singing for the Brain groups and other activities at the school, including a tea party.

A special recognition award was presented to John Hyde (Mr. Sloop) for his involvement with raising awareness and understanding through his books and his YouTube channel: Minus My Memory. John has dedicated his time and enthusiasm in helping young children to understand more about dementia and is a key volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Society and Dementia Wellbeing Service.
