Milestone moment celebrates the city’s creative hub for sustainability, culture and community, just two years after launching in 2023

Bristol’s one-of-a-kind sustainable department store, Sparks, is about to hit a major milestone welcoming its one millionth visitor through the doors in just over two years since launching. The celebration will coincide with World Environment Day today (Thursday 5th June), making the achievement a timely reminder of the power of community-driven climate action.

Housed in the former M&S building in Broadmead and run by charities Global Goals Centre and Artspace Lifespace, Sparks has fast become a symbol of what’s possible when creativity meets sustainability. With a vibrant mix of ethical and sustainable retailers, interactive exhibitions, climate education programmes and community events, Sparks has not only reimagined the high street, but also redefined how city centre spaces can serve both people and the planet.

Since opening in May 2023, Sparks has helped to divert more than 25,000 items from landfill through its repair, reuse and donation schemes and has supported over 190 sustainable small businesses by providing affordable space to test and grow their business. Reflecting its inclusive ethos, 70% of Sparks’ businesses are women-owned and 25% come from minority communities.

Kathryn Chiswell Jones, Company Manager at Artspace Lifespace, said: “Reaching a million visitors in just over two years is a phenomenal achievement for a grassroots project. It shows the appetite for spaces that do things differently, where you can shop with purpose, learn something new and feel part of a wider movement for change.”

The Sparks team are encouraging visitors old and new to drop in throughout World Environment Day to explore the latest sustainable shopping, exhibitions and events and maybe even be number one million.
