Former BBC Journalist Ali Vowles Joins Bristol Dementia Research Charity
Renowned former BBC journalist Ali Vowles has officially partnered with Bristol-based charity BRACE Dementia Research as its newest charity ambassador.
The appointment holds deep personal significance for Ali Vowles, whose late mother lived with dementia in her later years. With statistics showing one in three people born today will develop dementia in their lifetime, the charity aims to accelerate scientific breakthroughs and deliver vital treatments for affected families.
BRACE funds ground-breaking scientific research across the South West of England and South Wales into the causes, early diagnosis, and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
Supporting South West Scientific Breakthroughs
Vowles has supported BRACE for several years by hosting conferences, presenting public events, and championing local fundraising campaigns.
Recent pioneering research funded by the charity includes:
-
Portable Early Diagnosis: A portable early-stage dementia test currently undergoing NHS trials for potential clinical adoption.
-
Gene Therapy Advances: Investigative studies into potential Alzheimer’s gene therapy treatments.
-
Regional Grants: Targeted funding for top neuroscientists working across South West universities and medical research hubs.
A Personal Commitment to Fighting Dementia
Speaking on her new ambassador role, Ali Vowles highlighted the personal drive behind her involvement:
“Becoming an Ambassador for BRACE feels like a particularly good fit and a very personal one. Having known the charity for some time, both personally and professionally, I’ve always been impressed by what it is trying to achieve. Dementia is something that has touched my family very personally, so supporting research into dementia and Alzheimer’s is incredibly important to me.”
Liberty Harrison, Chief Executive Officer of BRACE Dementia Research, welcomed the partnership:
“We are delighted to welcome Ali on board as an ambassador for BRACE. She has already done so much for the charity, and we look forward to seeing what else we can achieve together, in support of dementia research.”
