Artspace Lifespace offers alternative ways to celebrate love, community and culture this February

Artspace Lifespace, the arts organisation supporting creative residencies across Bristol, is offering an alternative way to celebrate Valentine’s Day and the rest of February with a diverse programme of events across its unique venues. From reggae and ska nights to eco-conscious shopping experiences, art workshops and family-friendly activities, the programme invites the Bristol community to connect through music, art and creativity.

For those seeking an unconventional way to mark Valentine’s Day, Sparks Bristol will stay open late on Friday 14th February, offering an evening of ethical shopping, gifts and an alternative film night. Visitors can explore eco-friendly gifts from local independent retailers or take part in creative experiences such as a massage session or a terrarium-making workshop.

At Arts Mansion, set within the stunning Ashton Court Estate, live music will take centre stage throughout February. On Valentine’s Day, Two Step Forward’s “Lover’s Rock” event will bring a mix of ska, rocksteady and dub to the Great Hall, providing an alternative soundtrack for the evening. Later in the month, Community Union will host an immersive night of music and visuals on Friday 28th February, while Friday 14th March will see an Irish Takeover pre-St Patrick’s Day family-friendly celebration of music and dance.

Art lovers can immerse themselves in new exhibitions and creative workshops. The Aleatory exhibition, running from Wednesday 26th February at The Island Gallery, will showcase work from over 30 Weston College art and design students, exploring the theme of chance in art across fine art, textiles, photography and 3D design. A private view will take place on Tuesday 25th February from 6pm to 9pm. Meanwhile, on 19 February, The Island Gallery will host a life drawing session with Bristol-based artist Mark Jessup, open to all abilities.

Families looking for creative activities during February half term can visit Sparks Bristol for hands-on workshops. The Global Goals Centre will lead a papier-mâché water balloon drop activity for the Wonderful Water Festival on Wednesday 19th and Friday 21st February, while V Busy Bakery will offer cupcake decorating workshops on Thursday 20th. Sparks Bristol’s much-loved interactive bus and in-store piano will also be available for visitors to enjoy.
