Shirehampton High Street Market Finds New Home

The first High Street Market of the year opened on Thursday 2^nd April giving Market Traders and customers a first look of their new home.

It has moved to Shirehampton Methodist Church/Hub on the corner of the High Street and Penpole Avenue. It’s easy to find and is opposite Job Centre Plus.

Occupying most of the building space plus the car park, you could find 20 market stalls, 4 community stalls, the Market Kitchen and a crafts activity being run by a couple members of Shire Inspire. The 7^th May event will have some additional stalls added that will see the market being run to its full capacity.

New stalls included ‘Wardy’s Waves’, ‘Hens Tooth’, ‘ChocSmith’ ‘Paul The Woodworker ‘ and ‘All Sweets’. Regular favourites included ‘Homemade At 54′, Encanto Designs’, ‘Katz Kitchen,’ ‘Roseness Handmade Crafts’ ‘Proper Job Productions’ and ‘Food By Sophie’. The Market Traders gave their full approval whilst customers felt it was the perfect venue for the market. Steve Yabsley from BBC Radio Bristol came along to report on the new adventures ahead for the High Street Market that was broadcast on Easter Monday’s Breakfast Show.

Some of the feedback for the first market included:

“I bought my jewellery creations. It gives people a chance to actually interact with the person that makes the products rather than just buying them off the shelf and not really knowing where it’s come from”. said Phillip from Encanto Designs Jewellery. whilst Sophie from Food By Sophie said. “I like supporting my community. It’s not only for food. It’s also for socialisation because you meet loads of people when you come to these markets. We have lovely food. We have nice people. The atmosphere here is very lovely.”

Customers were also complimentary: “It keeps the community alive. You can get something different. You can meet the people that are on the stalls, friendship, and you get to support people that do things locally rather than maybe going to the big stores in town.”

“It’s old-fashioned values really, traditional values, and it’s nice to see them still existing together.”

“I just think you get more of that shopping experience at this market. It’s so much nicer to come out and you can make a day out of it as well”.

Future markets will include the new ‘Arts, Crafts, and Conversation’ activity held in the ‘Kitchen Community Room’ where people can bring along their own arts/crafts or take part in a provided arts/craft activity which is open to all ages, where you can chat away to your hearts content.

Why should the children have all the fun? And you’ll make new friends over a cuppa and a piece of cake, where you will always find a warm welcome.

They also plan to have some acoustic music sessions at some markets to add ambience to the event and provide the opportunity for local musicians to expand their audience, build confidence and perform their own songs. New adventures and exciting times lay ahead for the High Street Market.

The High Street Market takes place the first Thursday of each month from 9am until 2pm at Shirehampton Methodist Church/Hub, High Street/Penpole Avenue, BS11 0DY. The next High Street Market takes place on Thursday 7^th May.
