A Bristol ship laden with artisan Portuguese wine is on its way
World’s most sustainable Wine Importer is set to sail a ship full of fine Portuguese Wine into Under Fall Shipyard, Bristol this bank holiday weekend
A ship laden with artisan Portuguese wine is on its way to Bristol. Powered by wind alone, the vessel departed Porto on August 7th and is set to arrive in Bristol on 30th August.
Anton Mann and Lela McTernan, who have been professionally trading and sailing Portuguese wines since 2012 into their home City of Bristol, are set to dock their zero carbon, zero waste trading ship into Under Fall Yard Docks on Bank Holiday Monday.
Anton Mann, owner of Xisto Wines commented ” We are delighted to once again be docking our wines into Bristol, a city hugely proud of its green credentials. All our imported wine is transported sailing ships from Porto to Bristol, delivering near zero-carbon cargo. Our quest has been to offer an alternative. A continually improving low-impact supply chain.“
A business built on sustainability, Xisto Wines is run by Anton and Lela, who import wines from Portugal using traditional cargo ships. The voyage by sail leaves minimal impact on the planet, meaning the system of transport makes their wines positively “as good as local”.
But it doesn’t stop there, Once the wines arrive, they are then distributed to customers via electric, bio-fuelled vehicles or cycle couriers ensuring the whole logistic supply chain is green and sustainable.
Lela continued “Our role, and what part we could play was to improve the transportation, handling and packaging from the” vineyard to the glass”. We encourage the revaluing of everything, and everyone involved. Avoiding waste and unnecessary plastic and packaging of all kinds. For example, with today’s cargo we are removing the normal industry practise of single use pallet shrink wrap and, using reusable wraps we have made for continual use. A growing number of our bottles are returned refilled, and reused. Or at worst recycled. There’s still a lot to do but we are certainly making headway.”
“It’s difficult to say when the ship will dock due to the recent bad weather, but that’s all part of our zero carbon journey we strive for, it’s important we work with nature and the elements. And when it reaches the last leg and sales under Clifton Suspension Bridge it really is quite a sight!”
