HMRC warns taxpayers evading capital gains tax

Published On: February 19th, 2024

HMRC has recently announced a significant crackdown on individuals evading capital gains tax.

Taxpayers who have received a message from HMRC regarding unpaid capital gains tax must take immediate action to rectify their tax status within a strict 60-day period, or risk being subject to an investigation. It is particularly important for those who are unsure about their outstanding tax obligations to reach out to HMRC directly and provide a detailed explanation.

In accordance with the regulations, capital gains tax must be paid within 60 days of selling a property. Taxpayers have various payment options, including bank transfer, debit card, or corporate credit card through their Government Gateway account. It is necessary to use the payment reference number that is provided after submitting the tax return.

Moreover, HMRC requires specific information when it comes to selling land. This includes the property’s address and postcode, the date of acquisition, and the date of exchanging contracts during the sale or disposal process. Additionally, individuals must provide the completion date when they ceased to be the property owner, the property’s value at the time of acquisition and disposal, any costs related to purchasing, selling, or enhancing the property, and the duration of residency in the property, if applicable, specifying exact dates.

This crackdown on capital gains tax evasion reflects HMRC’s commitment to ensuring tax compliance and preventing individuals from incorrectly reporting or failing to report their capital gains tax liabilities. By implementing strict measures and providing taxpayers with a limited timeframe to address these issues, HMRC aims to deter tax evasion and ensure that individuals pay the correct amount of capital gains tax owed.
