Jessie May highlights crucial home support
When two-and-a-half-year-old Oscar was diagnosed with leukemia just weeks after moving from the US to Bristol this summer, his family found themselves navigating a frightening new reality.
“It was terrifying, especially being in a new country with no family or friends around us,” recalls his mum, Karla. But support from Jessie May’s Oncology Care Service has been life-changing. “They don’t just care for his medical needs, they see him. They see past the tubes and IVs and see a little boy who wants to be loved and played with,” Karla says.
Oscar, a fun-loving and resilient little boy who loves to sing and dance, suddenly found himself surrounded by hospital rooms, IV chemo, and constant medical care.
“We noticed something was wrong with Oscar’s arm,” Karla explained. “We took him to A&E and discovered he’d broken it – which was strange, because he hadn’t had a big fall. Not long after, he broke his femur. That’s when the doctors began investigating further, leading to the heartbreaking news.” Despite everything, Oscar has won over every doctor and nurse with high-fives, fist bumps, and hugs.”
Jessie May nurses first visited Oscar in hospital, then continued their care at home. These visits have brought huge relief for the family during an incredibly overwhelming time. “We’d only been in the UK for a month and had no one. I said yes to every bit of help we could get, and Jessie May was one of the charities we were referred to. I didn’t even realise how much of a help it would be,” Karla said.
“Oscar’s on continuous IV chemo and feeds, so I have to follow him everywhere with two backpacks. But when Jessie May nurses come in, it’s like, they’ve just got it. I can breathe. I trust them completely, and that trust is such a gift.”
Home-based care from Jessie May offers more than just medical support; it provides emotional stability and a sense of normality. Vic, Jessie May’s Lead Oncology Nurse, explains; “Home is where children feel safe and where parents can take a moment for themselves. Knowing we can support them in their own home helps build a trusting relationship and puts them at ease; the trust families place in us is invaluable.”
At Jessie May, they understand the challenges that come with a child or young person’s cancer journey – not only for them, but for their whole family. Vic says, “Our service is really holistic – we support the whole family, making sure every member has the care they need.”
Karlas’ advice to other families facing childhood cancer is, “Take it a day at a time. Say yes to everything -every offer of help, every charity, every meal. Even if you’re not sure it’s what you need, the act of someone showing up can be incredibly encouraging.”
