New research shows people in Bristol more likely to make life-changing decisions as result of pandemic

More than two thirds of people (68%) in Bristol say the Covid pandemic has made them more likely to make big decisions in their lives in order to take back control, according to new research carried out by leading housebuilders Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes.

Added to this, half of respondents (50%) said time spent with life ‘on hold’ in 2020 has actually accelerated big life decisions such as moving house, getting married or divorced, starting a family or having more children, or starting a business.

Conducted in counties across the South West including Bristol, the research sought to establish people’s greatest concerns about life and home planning as a result of the pandemic.

54% of people in Bristol said not knowing when it would all be over was one of the greatest challenges and over half of respondents across the city (52%) found not being able to make long term plans one of the hardest things. 85% of people who said they struggled with not being able to make plans admitted to feeling frustrated and 1 in 4 said it made them angry.

Despite the challenges, almost two thirds (65%) of people in Bristol said they had enjoyed more time at home this year, with 19% saying they intended to continue spending more time there once the pandemic is over.

Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes are currently building new communities across the South West including the flagship Ladden Garden Village in Yate. Barratt Homes is also building contemporary new homes at Northfields Park, Patchway and David Wilson Homes will soon launch its range of traditional homes at Morton Meadows in Thornbury.

The five star house builders say the surge in interest in buying a new home following the first lockdown this summer has continued even into the usually quieter pre-Christmas period. Barratt and David Wilson Homes have seen 51% more people across the South West registering their interest in a development this year (July to November) than in the same period last year. This is backed up by the new research which found that more than a third (39%) of people in Bristol said the pandemic has made them more likely to move house in the next year or more.

This is also borne out by what we’re seeing in our sales offices, with enquiries for new homes dramatically up on last year, even during times which are traditionally quieter for housebuilders.”
