Bristol Football! City Flying, Rovers Fighting Back
Bristol’s football season’s barely out the blocks and the stories on each side of the river couldn’t be more different.
Robins Take Flight
Well now, the red side of Bristol got plenty to smile about. Bristol City kicked off their Championship campaign with a proper statement, rolling into Bramall Lane and giving Sheffield United a right seeing to with a thumping 4–1 win. Scott Twine was the star of the show, bagging two crackers – one of ’em a free-kick so sweet it could’ve come out of a dream. Ross McCrorie and Anis Mehmeti added the other goals, making it a night to remember for the travelling Robins faithful.
The performance had everything: slick passing, ruthless finishing, and the sort of pressing that makes the opposition look like they’ve still got their flip-flops on from holiday. Even Sheffield United’s new gaffer was left scratching his head after the final whistle.
A few days later, City were back at Ashton Gate for a Carabao Cup tie against MK Dons. No hangover from that big win – just another professional job. A tidy 2–0 victory, a few squad players getting minutes, and most importantly, the winning habit continues. Two games, two wins, and the belief is already bubbling that this could be a proper season for the Robins.
Rovers in Choppy Waters
Over in Horfield, it’s been a trickier start for the Gas. The League Two opener at home to Harrogate was one of those frustrating afternoons. Loads of the ball, decent chances, but nothing to show for it. Then one moment of quality from the visitors and bang – a 1–0 defeat. Not the way the Memorial Stadium crowd had imagined kicking things off.
A trip to Fleetwood in the league followed, and it wasn’t much kinder. Rovers battled but ended up on the wrong side of a 2–1 scoreline. The performance wasn’t without positives – a bit of grit, some bright spells going forward – but once again, it was the opposition celebrating at full-time.
Then came the Carabao Cup first round against Cambridge United at The Mem. Hopes were high for a bit of a cup run to lift the mood, but Cambridge had other ideas. They nicked an early goal and then killed the game off with a second, sending Rovers out of the competition without troubling the scorers. That’s three games, no wins, and not a single clean sheet.
Still, there’s no panic just yet. The season’s barely started, and Darrell Clarke’s been around long enough to know it’s about what you’re doing come spring, not just in August. The players have been talking about sticking together and working harder, and the Gasheads will be right there with them – that’s the Brizzle way.
Two Clubs, Two Stories
It’s funny how the same city can feel two totally different moods at the same time. Down south, the Robins are flying, brimming with confidence and already dreaming of climbing the Championship table. Up north, the Gas are trying to steady the ship and get their first win on the board.
For City, it’s about keeping the momentum rolling. When you start like that, you set standards – and supporters will expect the same energy every week. For Rovers, it’s about turning solid play into points. The performances haven’t been disastrous, but football’s a cruel game when you don’t take your chances.
Looking Ahead
City’s next test is a home clash against Charlton Athletic – a chance to make it three wins from three and keep Ashton Gate buzzing. If Twine, Mehmeti, and the rest keep playing the way they have, the red half of the city could be in for some proper fun this season.
Rovers, meanwhile, face Chesterfield in their next league match. A win there would change the whole atmosphere and get everyone believing again. One good result can do wonders, and the Gas know that better than most.
So, as the season gets going, Bristol’s got one team soaring and another fighting to find their feet. Whichever colours you wear – red or blue – it’s bound to be another rollercoaster ride. And in this city, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
