Blue Monday has gone! Understanding the Day’s Impact on Our Emotions.
Yesterday was (Monday 20th January) Really “Blue Monday” ? Understanding the Day’s Impact on Our Emotions.
Yesterday marked what is commonly referred to as “Blue Monday,” often dubbed “the most depressing day of the year.” This term originated in 2005, when a travel company commissioned a psychologist to identify the most depressing day of the year, for their marketing to promote Winter holidays. For some, it’s just another Monday, but for others, the label of Blue Monday can feel like a heavy weight, amplifying feelings of negativity and sadness.
But do we truly believe in the concept of Blue Monday? Or is it simply a narrative that has shaped how we perceive this day, and perhaps, even our emotions? After all, there is no scientific evidence supporting the idea that January 20th is any more depressing than any other day. In fact, many critics argue that the entire concept of Blue Monday – and similar “visibility days” focused on negative emotions – risk trivialising serious mental health issues.

Visibility days, such as those dedicated to mental health awareness, can be beneficial for starting important conversations and letting people know they’re not alone. However, the downside is that it can create an oversimplified view of complex emotions. Depression, for instance, doesn’t have a set day, and its grip can affect anyone at any time of the year.
Despite the debate surrounding Blue Monday, it’s worth acknowledging that January can, in fact, be a challenging month for many people. The cold, dark days often lead to feelings of isolation, and the aftermath of the holiday season—such as the “post-Christmas blues” or concerns about overspending—can leave many struggling. Financial stress, a lack of daylight, and feelings of burnout from the holidays can combine to create a tough start to the year.
However, it’s also important to recognise that today, and indeed any day, offers an opportunity for a fresh start. Monday is the beginning of a new week, and with it comes the potential for new challenges, exciting experiences, and even small wins that can change the trajectory of our lives. In this light, whether today feels like “Blue Monday” or “Yellow Monday,” or any other description you choose to give it for you, it’s a good time to check in with your emotions, reflect, and reset for the days ahead.
So, while the notion of Blue Monday may spark conversation, it’s vital to remember that mental health is not something that should be confined to a single day or simplified into a label. Every day is an opportunity for growth, self-care, and emotional exploration. So whether you’re feeling blue, upbeat, or somewhere in between, taking a moment to acknowledge and care for your mental health is always really important!
